Wedding ceremony music booking guide

Which parts of the ceremony do I need music for?

There are up to five moments during the service which you may require music for:

  • Prelude (several songs, as guests take their seats)
  • Bridal entrance (1 song)
  • Signing of the register (several songs)
  • Bridal exit (1 song)
  • Postlude (several songs, as guests move to the reception)

What is processional and recessional music?

Processional music is music for the bridal entrance and recessional is the bridal exit.

What music should I have played at my wedding ceremony?

Most couples have a favourite band or song, and music that reminds them of special times and special people. If you're not sure, browse our wedding ceremony song ideas to find your perfect playlist.

Bear in mind if you're booking live musicians and the song is a bit obscure, the act may require a fee to cover additional rehearsal time, but it's worth it for one of the most memorable moments of your life.

Which musicians should I choose?

Classical music – primarily performed by string quartets, harpists and guitarists – are still the most popular choice for wedding ceremonies, so our musicians veer strongly to this genre.

If classical repertoire isn't your thing, bear in mind that many string quartets, harpists, classical guitarists and singers have musically diverse song-lists which include pop, folk, opera, film music and Bollywood as well as classical favourites – and some may even learn a special song for you.

If you'd like something altogether more modern, you could hire an acoustic guitar/vocalist or acoustic duo performing rock and pop covers from the 60s to the present day.If you're planning a Jewish wedding, klezmer music is a popular option.

If you have Caribbean heritage, or simply fancy something more unusual, a steel pan soloist or duo will lend an exotic, upbeat touch to your ceremony.

Is my venue suitable for live musicians?

Classical musicians and soloists are very adaptable. Because they don’t require much space or amplification, they don’t need a stage or have any power requirements and can play both in and outdoors – though if playing outdoors bear in mind they'll need shelter from the sun and rain!

If your venue is small or has specific acoustic requirements, it can be helpful to speak to the musicians well in advance, so that they can help you make the appropriate plans. Wedding musicians are used to these kind of restrictions and will be able to plan around them.

How can I save money on my wedding ceremony music?

If you’re watching the pennies, you can still have great music for your wedding ceremony. We recommend saving money by using a smaller group of musicians, a soloist or a soloist with backing tracks.

If you've already hired a band for your evening wedding party, check whether they can offer a soloist or duo in a gentler, acoustic format for the earlier part of the day. Using the same musicians for both the ceremony and the reception – and perhaps even the photos and wedding breakfast – could save you money and make your planning easier!

Bear in mind that you'll be paying additional standing time on site, not just the performance, but overall it would work out less expensive than hiring three separate acts, mainly due to the savings on travel costs.
